My friend Rick’s life changed on the drive home from a West Virginia ski trip. His ten-year-old daughter, Emily, had broken her leg. She rested in the back of their SUV with her mother, Joni, and little brother, Gabriel.

Thirty minutes from home, Rick was imagining his children attending Christian camp someday. That is his last memory before waking in a hospital eight hours later.

He had driven into a tree. His wife and children were critically injured. The following Sunday, Gabriel went home to be with Christ. Within the next day, Joni and Emily followed.

Later, I asked Rick whether he had doubted God’s love or his faith.

“I didn’t doubt God’s sovereignty,” he said, “but I did wrestle with doubts about why He kept me alive.”

Faith can carry questions that words cannot answer.

Have you ever believed God was good while struggling to understand what He allowed? Have you prayed through tears, wondering whether He heard you?

Bring those questions to Jesus. You do not have to hide your anguish. Scripture gives us an honest prayer for such moments: “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24).

Early in my walk with God, doubts often troubled me. They drove me to Scripture, to wise believers, and to prayer. As I sought Him, my faith grew deeper—even when answers came slowly.

Your questions can draw you closer to Christ too. Open His Word. Ask for help. Let someone faithful walk beside you. Keep praying, even when all you can say is, “Lord, help me.”

We cannot explain every tragedy. Rick’s loss deserves more than easy answers. Yet the cross reveals a Savior who entered our suffering, and the empty tomb declares that death will not have the final word.

Trust may begin here: Lord, I do not understand. Please help me take the next step with You.

You may still weep. You may pray those words again tomorrow. Through it all, Christ remains worthy of your trust.

Lord Jesus, receive my questions and my grief. Lead me into truth, strengthen my trembling faith, and help me trust Your love when I cannot understand. Amen.
