A few years ago, a friend sat across from me, worn down by waiting. She had prayed for years for a husband. Now, at forty, never married, she felt the weight of it all. The waiting. The silence. The questions.
“Being single is not the abundant life,” she said, with a mix of frustration and sadness.
I understood more than I wanted to admit. I knew what it felt like to watch others receive what you’ve been asking God for. I knew the quiet ache of wondering if something good had passed you by.
But her words stayed with me. Not because I didn’t feel her pain, but because of what she believed it meant.
So I opened my Bible and landed in John 10:10:
“The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy, but I have come that they might have life and have it to the full.”
That word “life” caught my attention. I looked deeper and found that the word used there is zoe. It speaks of life in the soul and spirit. The very life of Christ given to us. The highest and best He offers.
Not something outside of us. Something within us.
It shifted everything.
Abundant life isn’t tied to a relationship status. It isn’t found in a job title, a calling, or a season finally changing. It isn’t something we step into once everything lines up the way we hoped.
Abundant life is Jesus Himself.
Knowing Him. Walking with Him. Being filled with His presence. That is the fullness we’ve been searching for.
We often attach the idea of a full life to what we don’t yet have. We tell ourselves, “When this happens, then I’ll feel complete.” But that kind of thinking keeps us reaching for something just out of reach.
And the more we chase it, the more empty we feel.
Scripture calls those pursuits broken cisterns. They promise to hold what we need, but they can’t. Only Jesus can.
When we begin to see Him as the source, something settles in us. The striving quiets. The pressure lifts. There’s a peace that doesn’t depend on circumstances finally changing.
Because the life we long for is not waiting somewhere ahead of us. It’s already been given.
The question is not whether it’s available.
It’s whether we’ve recognized it.
Have you seen Jesus as the abundant life your heart has been searching for?
