Maybe you’ve heard someone say, “I’m just trusting God—if He wants me to do it, He’ll open the door. If not, He’ll close it.” It sounds simple. Safe, even. Just wait, watch, and walk through whatever opens.
And yes—sometimes God does lead that way.
Paul even talked about an “effective door” opening for ministry (1 Corinthians 16:9). And in Acts 16, he describes what felt like a very clear closed door—being “forbidden” by the Holy Spirit to go somewhere he intended. God absolutely can guide us through open and closed doors.
But here’s the honest truth: not every open door is from God… and not every closed one is meant to stop you forever.
I Learned This the Hard Way
A few years ago, I prayed a very specific prayer. I asked God to bring someone into my life who could help me shape a ministry plan and provide financial support. I felt led to pray boldly, so I did.
And then—almost immediately—it happened.
Within a week, someone stepped into my life. I didn’t even have to ask—they offered exactly what I had prayed for. Strategy. Support. Resources. It felt like a neon sign from heaven: “This is it!”
I didn’t question it. I didn’t slow down. I walked right through that “open door.”
And it turned into one of the hardest, most painful seasons I’ve walked through. It affected me—and others around me—in ways I never expected.
But looking back now, I can see something I couldn’t see then: God didn’t waste that experience. He used it to grow me. To sharpen my discernment. To teach me how to walk with Him more closely—not just chase opportunities.
Out of that season, a few lessons have stayed with me.
Don’t Rush What Looks Right
When something shows up that looks exactly like what you’ve been praying for, it’s tempting to jump in fast. But God doesn’t rush you.
He’s not pushing you from behind, trying to make you panic into a decision. He leads—He doesn’t pressure.
If it’s truly from Him, it won’t fall apart because you took time to seek Him first.
Pray—Then Pray Again
Before stepping through any door, take it back to God. Sit with Him in it.
Search His Word. Invite Him to speak. And don’t be afraid to ask others you trust to pray with you. Sometimes we’re too close to a situation to see clearly.
God often uses wise counsel to protect us from what our emotions might overlook.
Pay Attention to Peace
There’s a reason Scripture says to “let the peace of God rule in your hearts” (Colossians 3:15).
That peace is like an internal referee—calling things safe or out.
I’ll be honest—it took me years to really trust that. There were times I felt uneasy about something but moved forward anyway because it looked right on the outside.
Now I’ve learned: when that quiet, steady nudge inside says, “This isn’t it,” I listen.
God’s voice isn’t always loud—but it is faithful.
Walk Forward Without Fear
Here’s the freeing part: you don’t have to live in fear of making the “wrong” decision.
God is bigger than your choices.
Even when we misstep—even when we walk through doors we shouldn’t—He is still right there, guiding, correcting, redeeming. Nothing is wasted in His hands.
You are not one wrong decision away from losing His plan.
You are held.
So yes, God may open doors. And yes, He may close them.
But more than anything, He invites you into something deeper than just watching doors…
He invites you to walk with Him.
