There’s something sacred about a stack of unread books.
My bedside table—full of promise, possibility, and good intentions. Some I couldn’t wait to buy but never found the time to read. Others I started, only to quietly abandon, disappointed but unwilling to let them go. Still, I keep them. Hope lingers in their pages.
When my daughters were little, I taught them a ritual for entering bookstores: pick up a book, crack it open, bury your nose deep in the pages, and breathe in. That rich scent of ink, paper, and glue—like possibility itself—was part of the experience. To this day, they still do it. Without hesitation. Without embarrassment. I love that about them. I love them. And yes, I still love the books too.
But I have a friend, Donna, who loves books on an entirely different level. Every room in her house holds shelves bending under their weight. She jokes about her “addiction,” but there’s something admirable about it—because she doesn’t just collect words, she consumes the Word. She spends more time in Scripture than in any other story. That’s the kind of love that transforms a life.
I once heard a story about a woman much like us—an avid reader who brought books home in stacks. One, in particular, disappointed her. It felt dry, irrelevant, even poorly written. She shelved it and forgot it.
Years later, at a gathering, she met a man. Conversation with him felt effortless, electric—like discovering a language her soul already spoke. He was a writer; she, a lover of books. They parted reluctantly, hearts quietly awakened.
That night, too alive to sleep, she searched her shelves for anything he had written. And there it was—the very book she had dismissed years ago. Dusty. Forgotten. Misjudged.
She opened it again.
This time, it was different.
Every word shimmered with meaning. Every sentence felt alive, intentional, beautiful.
What changed?
Not the book.
Her heart.
She had fallen in love with the author.
And suddenly, his words mattered.
How many of us have a Book like that sitting nearby? Not just any book—but the Book. A love letter written personally to us. Pages filled with truth, comfort, challenge, and grace… yet often left unopened, collecting dust.
Why?
Because sometimes, we try to read it before we truly know the Author.
Scripture isn’t meant to be just studied—it’s meant to be experienced through relationship. When we come to know Jesus—not just as a name on a page, but as Savior, Friend, Redeemer—everything changes. The words come alive. They breathe. They speak directly into the quiet corners of our hearts.
It’s not about checking a box or finishing a chapter.
It’s about falling in love.
And here’s the beautiful truth: you don’t have to chase that love—it’s already chasing you.
“We love because He first loved us.” —1 John 4:19
Before you ever opened the Book, the Author knew you. Loved you. Chose you.
So maybe today isn’t about reading more.
Maybe it’s about knowing Him more.
Open the Book again—not out of obligation, but out of curiosity. Out of longing. Out of a desire to meet the One who wrote eternity into your story.
Because once you fall in love with the Author…
you’ll never read the same way again.
