It’s a question that comes up more often than we admit. What does God want to do with my life?
It can feel hard to live with purpose when you are unsure what that purpose is. We want to move forward, but we also don’t want to move in the wrong direction. So we hesitate. We second guess. We wait for clarity.
Understanding how God designed you is a good place to begin.
Tim Keller once shared a simple way to think about this. He pointed to three clues that help us see how God may be shaping our lives: affinity, ability, and opportunity.
Affinity: What Stirs Your Heart
Think about how a guitar string responds to sound. When a certain note is played, the matching string begins to vibrate. It responds because it is tuned for that note.
In a similar way, there are things your heart responds to. Certain moments give you energy. Certain needs move you. Certain kinds of work feel meaningful to you, even when they are difficult.
That response matters.
What excites one person may overwhelm another. What drains someone else might bring you to life. Those differences are not accidents. They are part of how God has wired you.
Pay attention to what stirs something inside you. That is often a clue.
Ability: What You Can Do Well
Desire alone is not enough. We have all seen people who love something deeply but struggle to do it well. Passion without skill can lead to frustration.
At the same time, skill without passion can feel empty. You may be capable, but it leaves you tired instead of fulfilled.
There is something different about the place where both come together. When you enjoy something and have the ability to grow in it, there is a sense of alignment. It feels right. Not easy, but right.
That combination is worth noticing.
Opportunity: When the Door Opens
Even when you have both passion and ability, timing still matters. Opportunity does not always come when we expect it.
There are seasons of waiting. Seasons of preparation. Seasons where it feels like nothing is happening.
But waiting is not wasted.
Think about the athlete who spends years practicing before getting a real chance to play. Those unseen hours matter. They shape readiness. They build strength. They prepare the heart.
When the opportunity comes, it often comes to those who have been quietly getting ready.
Bringing It Together
Affinity, ability, and opportunity work together. When one is missing, things feel off.
You may love something but not be ready for it yet.
You may be skilled in something that no longer brings you joy.
You may feel prepared but still be waiting for the right door to open.
That tension is part of the process.
Instead of rushing past it, sit with it for a moment.
Where do you feel drawn?
Where are you growing in skill?
Where might God be asking you to wait?
It can also help to invite someone you trust into the conversation. A wise voice can often see things in you that you might miss.
God is not guessing with your life. He is shaping it. Piece by piece. Season by season.
As you pay attention to what stirs your heart, where your abilities are growing, and how opportunities unfold, you may begin to see it more clearly.
You are not without direction. You are being formed for it.
