Many of us have heard that God wants us to live sacrificially, but what does that mean? I recently wrote a devotional on this topic based on Romans 12:1-2, and one of our readers asked a great question, “I want to live sacrificially but what am I sacrificing? How do I lead this life and know what to sacrifice?”
I can certainly relate to this question. I wish the Bible gave us a formula on how to live sacrificially, but I have discovered it’s a habit that is developed over time. It doesn’t happen instantly.
Today I’d like to offer some practical advice on how to cultivate an attitude of sacrifice.
1. Fix Your Eyes on Jesus
God set the ultimate example of sacrifice when He willingly came to the earth in human form. Jesus spent three busy years of ministry healing, feeding, and teaching others even when the days were long and He grew weary. He washed the disciple’s feet to show His love for them. Ultimately, He was willing to give up His life on the cross. Jesus set a standard for our lives which we can model in big and small ways.
2. Pray for Discernment
The Holy Spirit is active in the life of every believer. Ask the Spirit to help you discern which sacrifices God is calling you to make. Pay attention to the small promptings of the Holy Spirit throughout your day and take action. Little steps of obedience lead to deeper faith.
3. Meet the Needs of Others as You Are Able
We all have opportunities to meet needs of those around us. Be on the lookout for practical ways you can share what God has given you – whether it’s time, talents, possessions, money, or other resources.
4. Recognize That Living Sacrificially is a Process
Giving our lives away is contrary to our sinful nature. Therefore, a sacrificial mindset takes time to develop as God matures us to love Him and others more than we love ourselves. When sacrifice becomes a habit, it often doesn’t feel like sacrifice. Instead, it is a joyful response to serving our Creator and those He has placed in our lives.
What specific opportunities has God given you to live sacrificially?
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)
