At the conferences where I speak, many people tell me they want to be free from the fears that hold them back and the doubts that plague them so that they can fulfill God’s plans for their life. Good news! The Bible contains the perfect recipe for this very thing.

John 8:32 says, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Maybe you are thinking, I have heard this scripture before but I still don’t how to get this truth that leads to freedom. How do I find it? Do I glean it from what my pastor says on Sunday morning? Do I get it from the culture, from a good book, or from relationship with a Christian friend?

If you take a look at the verse just before John 8:32, you will discover the answer for how to find the truth that leads to freedom so that you can fulfill God’s plans for your life.

This verse says, “To the Jews who believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you really are my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”’

This verse clearly shows that freedom is always preceded by discipleship and holding to Christ’s teaching. Therefore, fulfilling your purpose always and only happens within the context of relationship with Christ.

Here’s how it works:

  • First you must become Jesus’ disciple
  • Then you hold to his teaching
  • As a result you will know truth and be set free to be all God has called you to be.

Being a disciple means that you are more than just a learner or pupil. A disciple is someone who accepts instruction given to him by God to make it his rule of conduct. In fact, the word disciple is derived from a word that means “to learn by putting what one learns into practice.” Therefore, intellectual knowledge is not the measure of discipleship. Action is the measure of discipleship.

What you do with what you learn from Christ is the difference between experiencing freedom and purpose, and living a wasted life.

Do you want to be free to fulfill God’s purpose and plan for your life? First give him your life, listen to him, and then put what you learn from him into practice.
