Defining moments come into every life.

For Moses, it was a burning bush. For Peter, it was stepping out onto the water. For Paul, it was the blinding light on the road to Damascus. Moments like these shift everything.

For me, it happened during my junior year of high school.

I had grown up as a good kid. But somewhere along the way, I started spending time with the wrong people. Slowly, without even realizing it, I began to take on their choices, their habits, their way of living. What once felt wrong started to feel normal. And eventually, it caught up with me.

I can still see it clearly. I was 17, sitting at the dinner table with my mom, dad, and older brother. My dad brought up what I had done. There was no avoiding it. I told the truth. I admitted who I had been with. I owned my decision.

Looking back, I know I deserved serious consequences. Honestly, I should have been grounded for a long time. So it makes no sense that right after that conversation, I asked if I could still go out that night. It was a bold and foolish question.

What happened next marked my life.

My dad looked straight at me and said, “Hal, I believe in you. I believe you have what it takes. Just be home by 11.”

That was it.

No lecture. No harsh punishment. Just grace.

It broke something in me in the best way. That moment didn’t make me feel excused. It made me feel seen. It called me higher. It changed the direction of my life, and I have never been the same.

Even now, thinking about it brings tears to my eyes.

Grace is hard to explain until you’ve experienced it. It’s being given what you did not earn. It’s being trusted when you expected to be shut down. It’s being loved right in the middle of your failure.

“Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within. Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that is greater than all my sin.”

Have you ever been given a second chance like that?

And maybe more important, have you given one?

There may be someone in your life right now who expects judgment. Someone who knows they’ve messed up. Someone bracing for rejection.

What if you offered grace instead?

That moment could stay with them for the rest of their life. It could shift their path in ways you may never fully see.

And it just might change you too.
