I’ll be honest. Prayer doesn’t come easy for me.

It’s not that I don’t know I should pray. It’s that, deep down, I don’t always believe it works the way God says it does. Because if I truly believed prayer made a real difference, I wouldn’t treat it like an afterthought. I’d bring everything to God, all the time.

A pastor friend shared a moment that stuck with me. He was taking his child to the doctor and said a quick prayer on the way. Just a few words, asking for things to go well. Later, he realized something. While he had prayed, his real confidence was in the co-pay and the doctor’s visit.

He admitted the situation wasn’t serious. But then he asked himself a hard question. What if it had been serious? What if the diagnosis had been something life altering? His prayer would have sounded very different.

That simple moment revealed something deeper. We tend to pray in proportion to how much we believe God is actually involved in the outcome.

“Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16 to 18

So often, prayer becomes reactionary. Something happens, and we turn to God. There’s nothing wrong with that. But prayer was never meant to be just a place we go in moments of need. It’s meant to be a steady, ongoing conversation.

God isn’t waiting for polished words. He wants our hearts. He wants us to talk with Him throughout the day, to share what’s on our minds, and to slow down long enough to listen.

No request is too small. No concern is too ordinary. The goal isn’t just getting answers. It’s knowing Him.

And something changes when we spend time with Him. Our thoughts begin to shift. Our hearts soften. We start to trust Him more, not just for the big things, but for everything.

So take a moment and ask yourself. What do I really believe about prayer?

If there’s even a chance that the God who created everything is listening, ready to meet you in this moment, why hold back?

Talk to Him today. Not out of habit, but because you believe it matters.
