Michael LeBoeuf once said, “Devoting a little of yourself to everything means committing a great deal of yourself to nothing.” That idea hits close to home. It’s easy to spend a full day moving from one task to another and still feel like nothing truly important got done.
There’s a difference between activity and accomplishment. Being busy can feel productive, but it doesn’t always lead anywhere. As Henry David Thoreau pointed out, even ants stay busy all day. The real question is what all that effort is actually producing.
Scripture gives a clear picture of this in Exodus 18.
Moses spent his days listening to disputes from the people. From morning until evening, there was always another person waiting. He carried the weight of every decision on his own shoulders. It looked like dedication, but it wasn’t sustainable.
Jethro saw what was happening and spoke up. He told Moses, “What you are doing is not good. You will wear yourself out.” Then he offered a better way. Teach others. Share the responsibility. Focus on what only you can do.
That advice changed everything. Moses didn’t stop working. He started working wisely.
That same tension shows up today. It’s possible to check off every item on a list and still miss what matters most. A full schedule doesn’t always mean a fruitful life.
Real effectiveness comes from knowing what deserves your time and giving your energy there. It means letting go of the need to do everything so you can do the right things well.
When you begin to order your days with purpose, something shifts. You’re no longer just reacting. You’re moving forward with intention. And over time, you’ll start to see results that go far beyond what busyness alone could ever produce.
