Discomfort and reward often go together.

I experience this every time I write. A blank page sits in front of me, and I have to fill it. Behind every word is a quiet prayer that somehow I will have something worthwhile to say. Sometimes the process feels hard. Sometimes I wonder where the words will come from.

Then I type the final period.

The discomfort gives way to a deep sense of satisfaction. I look at what is on the page and think, This is why I was created.

In those moments, I sense God’s pleasure. I know I am doing something He has called me to do. And I would never experience that satisfaction if I had allowed the discomfort to stop me.

Why do we expect God’s plan for our lives to be comfortable?

Why do we want the reward without the risk? Why do we hesitate to follow a dream because we cannot see exactly where it will lead?

I recently spoke with a man who told me, “I hate my job, but I just keep hanging on because I realize with every day that passes, I’m getting closer to going home to heaven.”

His words broke my heart.

What a tragedy to spend years wasting skills, ignoring dreams, and denying desires God may have placed within us. He had come to believe that a mundane life was simply something he had to endure until heaven made everything better.

What if God has more for you than simply enduring your days?

When we demand comfort before we follow God’s calling, we can lose something precious. We can slowly give up on the dreams, gifts, and purposes God has placed within us. And when we continually silence those things, something inside us begins to grow quiet too.

Look at the people God used throughout Scripture. Their callings rarely came without difficulty.

Moses was mocked and rejected by the very people he was trying to rescue. Joseph was abused and ridiculed by his brothers. The disciples faced persecution because they followed Jesus. And Jesus Himself endured the cross.

Jesus understood something we often forget. Hebrews 12:2 says He endured the cross “for the joy that was set before Him.”

He could see beyond the pain.

The cross was not the end of His story. The suffering had a purpose, and joy was waiting on the other side.

Maybe you are thinking, That sounds great, but look what happened to Jesus. Following God’s will cost Him everything.

It did.

And yet, His life reminds us that obedience is worth the cost.

Imagine lying on your deathbed. Someone you love walks into the room, sits beside you, and asks, “What do you wish you had done with your life?”

What would you say?

Would you wish you had loved more? Dreamed more? Taken more chances? Said yes to the things God was placing in front of you?

Too many of us live carefully. We find reasons why we cannot pursue the dream. We talk ourselves out of taking the step. We feel God nudging us forward, yet we run back toward what feels safe.

God’s calling may not be comfortable.

There may be uncertainty. There may be sacrifice. There may be moments when you wonder if you heard Him correctly.

But there is also something waiting on the other side of obedience: the deep satisfaction of knowing you are living the life God created you to live.

You don’t have to know every step. You just have to be willing to take the next one.

Are you willing to risk some discomfort today to experience the joy of knowing you are walking in God’s purpose for your life?
