I’m not proud to admit it, but for years I struggled to give generously. I showed up. I gave something. But deep down, I knew I was holding back.

I had my reasons ready.

Some people give money. I give my time.
I don’t have much, so it doesn’t matter that much.
At least I’m giving something.

Those thoughts helped me feel comfortable, but they also kept me from being honest.

Then I came across a passage that stopped me in my tracks.

In Malachi, God speaks to His people with words that are hard to ignore. He reminds them that He has not changed. He calls them back to Himself. And then He asks a question that feels almost too strong:

“Will a mere mortal rob God?”

That word stayed with me. Rob.

It forced me to look at my giving in a different way. This wasn’t about percentages or comparison. It was about trust. It was about obedience. It was about whether I really believed God would take care of me.

As I sat with that passage, a few things became clear.

God gives first. Everything I have is already from Him. His provision has always been there, even when I wasn’t paying attention.

God does not change. The same God who cared for His people then is the same God who provides today. His faithfulness isn’t tied to my circumstances.

God notices. That realization was uncomfortable, but necessary. My choices mattered more than I wanted to admit.

God invites us back. He doesn’t shut the door when we get it wrong. He simply says, “Return to me.” There’s grace in that call.

Obedience matters. Not because God needs anything from me, but because obedience shapes my heart. It moves me from control to trust.

And maybe most surprising of all, God actually tells us to test Him. That step felt risky at first. Letting go of control usually does. But over time, I began to see something change in me. My grip loosened. My trust grew.

I started to realize that I was never really losing anything. I was learning to depend on Him.

You can’t outgive God. He gives in ways that go far beyond money. Peace. Freedom. A deeper trust that settles in your heart over time.

Giving is no longer something I do out of habit. It has become a reminder. A reminder that everything I have is from Him, and everything I trust Him with is safe in His hands.

So here’s the question I keep coming back to:

Where is God asking for your obedience right now?

And what would it look like to take one step toward Him today?
